08/30/11: SUMMER COMPARISONS

leave a comment »

My summer is ending and I’m going to have to go back to teaching in a bit. So I’m forced to think back on this summer.

Last summer I worked however and whichever way would work.

You first might notice the cardboard computer desk. (L-shaped desks scream VIP, no?)  You might also notice the print making storage boxes to the left and right, but the plastic bags thumb tacked to the walls to store my pieces is what triggers the most emotion for me.

Maybe my old school Town & Country Logo T served as inspiration…

I mowed the lawn…

in order to plant seeds.  This was the second go at a 4 ft. by 8 ft. landscape piece.

Feeling a little bit like Dorothy, it kinda sorta felt like a Summer in Oz.

Humbled and grateful more and more for everything that was given to me in my work space via Professional Artist Magazine and their studio makeover.

Design between the lines.  Last year was completely dedicated to gallery work.  This summer I’ve been working on some more commercial projects.  More on this later and the epiphany I had about design v. art.  But in short, I know there’s a huge huge difference between commercial and gallery art… but for me, I work to blur that line as much as possible.  Stay tuned for a future post on that.

Kindling.  Prints on wood were attempted in the past, and found the in storage this summer.  And I had to make room for more storage, so these had to go.  Should I go back to trying to perfect the process? Some limited edition wood prints in the future?  I’m welcome to any thoughts or suggestions.

More kindling.  Something I started in the early summer.  Now it’s in storage.  Not sure what to do with it.  We’ll see if it’s in pieces by the end of next summer.

The story of this piece will be made available on the new site that’s coming sooner than later.  Just remember, there’s always “room to grow”.

Projects that give me an opportunity to work with the folks at Viva LA Art and Freedom and Fashion and TOMS remind me of why I do art.

Stay tuned.  More images of the summer coming soon.
